* Chains of amino acids---the building blocks of protein.
* There are 20 amino acids ---body synthesizes 11, 9 must be supplied through foods we
eat
*All 9 essential must be in the body for protein synthesis to occur
What it does?
*repairs/builds tissue
*allows muscle growth to continue while carbphydrates preserve muscle mass
*antibodies are proteins (immune system)
*responsible for production of connective tissue, hormone and enzymes
* helps with fluid balance
*vision
* blood clotting
*Great for your hair
*Keeps you full/satisfied in small portions!
Where can i find it?
- beans
- tofu/soy beans
- wheats/grains---steel cut oats, whole wheat bread/rice/pasta, quinoa,
- veggies
- fish
- meats
- eggs
- cheese
- nuts
- grasses
Vegetarians/vegan----make sure the right food combinations give you a complete protein since it is difficult for us to get all our aminos. For exampl, rice and beans (complete), peanut butter and wheat bread. Soy beans, tofu, legumes, veggies and grains alone are incomplete and must be combined!!
SIDE EFFECTS?
increased protein leads to higher stress on the kidneys and their functions because of urea (waste product from protein/amin acid breakdown). Our bodies must get rid of this nitrogenous waste. Your body releases it through your urine---which comes out in different concentrations.
*kidney stones (also caused by dehydration)
*renal disease/kidney failure
What to do?
*drink a great deal of water!!!
*drinking 8 oz water, then 8 oz lemon water on an empty stomach upon waking also help
*exercise regularly
*eat plenty of fiber to help rid your body of toxins
*try a detox---does not have to be starving/fasting but just adding more veggies, herbs (cilantro,parsley etc.), grasses (wheat,barley etc.) ---add or replace things with it. Even if it is just a week.
*milk thistle is a good addition as well with high protein diets because it helps the liver cleanse.
